Tjena!

There’s an element of stress and desparation in my thought process these days but whatever the case: I would like to start playing analytical poker again. I don’t want to return to results-oriented monkey-tilt so my initial focus will be on learning to play objectively and dispassionately.

Beyond improving the mental aspects of my game, I want to branch out to NL, PLO and other forms of poker. I’m not going to hold myself back until I am a zen-like Limit Hold’em player because I only have so many years on this planet!

In order to fit in time for Poker, something else has to give. My relationship is too important and so is my job, so that only leaves other hobbies. I did a basic virtual representation in 3ds max to help make some choices. Here it is.

Competing pastimes - making room for poker

Foreign languages were the easiest target – this was a relatively new rekindled hobby.
My skill at a few CG applications will just have to stay at zero. I’ve already forgotten pretty much everything I used to know about using them so no harm in letting the apps fester apart from the unfortunate-matter of the money I’ve spent buying them.

Anyway, let’s see what happens next.

The Poker Strike’s Back

I’ve had a pretty horrible run at $2/4, culminating in the first $400 losing session a few days ago. I had wondered what a swing of that size would feel like and now I know:it didn’t feel good.

With all that is happening in the poker world and in real life, I’m taking at least a few days off from poker. Possibly more. I’ve even cancelled my subscription to DeucesCracked (and DragTheBar) for the time being.

I’m calling this my second Poker Strike but to be honest, if I had money to burn I would still be playing. It’s just that when push came to shove, I couldn’t mentally separate my poker bankroll from the real life bankroll that I’m currently trying to save for a house deposit and… er… a few choice gadgets if they meet expectations (e.g. iPhone 5).

I’ve withdrawn all funds from PokerStars. I’m trying to do the same at FullTilt but so far no joy: first attempt to withdraw via MoneyBookers (the method I used for the deposit) failed and the withdrawal request to Neteller (who I never wanted to use again due to high withdrawal and currency conversion fees) is still in limbo after 48 hours.

I’m in the process of moving half my regrouped poker roll back into real life funds. Once that’s done, I may use what’s left to start playing again at lower stakes just to scratch the itch. If Full Tilt releases my funds, I’m planning to play FT Daily Dollars with my FPPs to see if I can get a roll together again.

Given how hard it’s turning out to be to get my money back, even as a UK player, I don’t think I’ll be depositing any more cash on FullTilt for a while.

The one where Oba learns about Red-White-and-Blue (a.k.a. Black) Friday

If you’re a serious online poker player that hasn’t heard about the Friday 15th April US DOJ (Deparment of Justice) indictments vs the 3 largest US-facing poker sites then maybe you’ve been in France on business all week followed by a weekend break in London. Me too!

DoJ Notice on PokerStars.com

I took today off to recover from all the travelling and have just finished catching up with the thread on DC about it and I’ve reached saturation point on the subject for the time being but figured if I don’t post something about this on my blog, I will lose the opportunity to put a marker in my personal history of poker at around the time of this landscape-changing event.

Here are some links for content on the subject:

I’ve not tried to read the 2p2 forum thread. Good luck connecting to the site let alone wading through this one…

http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/29/news-views-gossip/reuters-full-tilt-poker-pokerstars-absolute-poker-charged-illegal-gambling-1020606/

Even though I live in the UK, I panic-withdrew funds on both PokerStars (50% of my roll) and FullTilt (100%) when I first found out about this on Saturday morning. The PokerStars withdrawal was processed to MoneyBookers within a few days (used to be immediate but I guess they are inundated at the moment). The FullTilt withdrawal failed.

I sincerely hope PokerStars sticks around. They are a great company. I’ve not got as much respect for FullTilt but like their software a lot and obviously would like my $500 back.

My heart goes out to all the US players who’s livelihood was just yanked from under their feet. Let’s hope this accelerates legalized poker in the US and there are enough skilled jobs in US’s weakened economy to keep US poker players afloat in the meantime.

The one where the maniac teaches Oba whilst taking his money

I played my longest $2/4 session last night trying to beat a maniac at his own game and ended down just over $200 (50BB). It would have been more but thankfully I got some cards towards the end of the session and it took the maniac a little while to realize that his heater-plus-over-eager-oba-fuelled winnings ($300+) would most likely evaporate if he stayed at the table much longer.

In the cold light of day – with 7 hours sleep behind me – I reviewed the session and felt pretty sick about what I saw: hand after hand butchered and worst of all during the game I was making little effort to strengthen reads over time .

I was gambling with the villain and hoping he would pwn himself. Guess who got pwned? :(

Lesson #1: Tiredness is tilt.

I was too tired to play in such a high variance situation last night. I’d say this is the best example I’ve had of tiredness-tilt in a while. Don’t do it!

Lesson #2: Maniacs are not complete idiots.

I’m not comfortable calling this guy a maniac to be honest. Having reviewed the hands he is definitely thinking about his hand and how it interacts with the board. He’s a thinking gambler.
On the other hand I don’t want to complicate matters by introducing another term for people that raise a lot of hands pre-flop and apply heaps of aggression post. Instead, I have to remember that just because someone plays like maniac doesn’t make them a complete idiot.

Thank you, sir, for these lessons.

stats from session

Here is a selection of misplayed hands. I won’t try to excuse my play cos at the time the thought process was just plain optimistic level 0.

The one where oba makes his first cameo appearance in a coaching video

If you’ve followed my blog for any period of time, you’ll know I’m a DeucesCracked fan boy at heart. It’s DeucesCracked’s videos and community (both coaches and members) that have built up my game and been there for me through thick and thin.

Well, I have a confession…

The Limit Hold’em video content on DeucesCracked has dropped off a lot in the last year (a real shame since they’ve signed some awesome Limit coaches recently) so when LHE Heads-up-specialist Hood blogged that he’d both become a coach on DragTheBar.com and recommended some of the other Limit Hold’em coaches there including recent signings, I decided to give DTB a try.

I started out watching a video by Sledghammer (a.k.a. Gareth) who has an accent that reminds me of Joe Tall. It was a video where he was getting 3-bet a lot. I then watched a few videos by Giant Buddha and one by Hood.

Imagine my surprise when, a few days later, I sit down at a $1/2 table to find Sledghammer on my left, 3-betting a lot. What a relief that I already knew he was a respected high-limit coach! I figured he was doing a video. The table was super aggressive so I quit after a few hands and only played one with Sledghammer.

Pre Flop: (1.5 SB) Hero is CO with 8 of hearts A of clubs
Hero raises, sledghammer 3-bets, 2 folds, Hero calls

Flop: (7.5 SB) 4 of clubs 7 of clubs 6 of hearts (2 players)
Hero checks, sledghammer bets, Hero calls

Turn: (4.75 BB) 2 of spades (2 players)
Hero checks, sledghammer bets, Hero calls

River: (6.75 BB) A of spades (2 players)
Hero checks, sledghammer checks

Final Pot: 6.75 BB
Hero shows 8 of hearts A of clubs (a pair of Aces)
sledghammer mucks Q of spades 9 of diamonds
Hero wins 6.5 BB
(Rake: $0.50)

The hand played out pretty standard but I was left wondering if it would wind up in a video. I didn’t have to wonder very long ‘cos when I checked the upcoming videos on DragTheBar, the next Sledghammer video was entitled: Revenge of the Sledge (the one where 60% of the time, sledge 3 bets every time) .

The video came out on Friday and I’ve just watched it. The hand didn’t make the cut but my avatar made a brief appearance :)

Results for March 2011

Here are my results for March 2011 together with the stats. I’ve included overall 3bet % and my unopened PFR % from each position as I’m concerned I’ve gone back to playing too LAG and want to monitor this in future months.

Results for March 2011

Stats for March 2011

Having said I wouldn’t play any more this month, I went back twice for more punishment. The second time was last night and I ran into another run of negative variance wiping over $100 off the months proceeds. I’m still rolled for $2/4 but only just and only because I cashed in all my FPPs and Stellar Rewards.

I’ve lost about two buy-ins for $2/4 over the last week and tilted more than I’d like. Worst of all, I’ve developed a nasty habit of opening overly wide and calling down too light.

Anyhoo, I’ve got places to go. See ya!
